Example of how to plan a convention trip.
With a week until Wizard World: Sacramento, Wizard World has sent out a first version of their panel itinerary, and in my previous post my first tip was planning your event BEFORE you get there. This will save time, and leave space for those times to venture forth from the con to eat. Below will be my stream of consciousness (be careful how far down the rabbit hole you go here people) while I’m planning my trip.
If you’d like you can open up the panel schedule in another pane and follow along: Panel Schedule Link
Edits due to final prep Friday morning.
3:00pm (open of con) to 5:00pm starts some fun video game bootcamps, but I don’t feel like being wedged inside a bunch of kids so I’m going to pass on this.
5:00pm has an MST3K (one of my favorite shows of all time) type panel until 5:45, but this will intersect with a 5:30 panel around careers in video game media hosted by some great local talent in Aaron Carter and Cory Vincent of Video Game Bang (@VideoGameBang) so I think I will be attending that one instead.
**5:30 – 6:15 WONDER CAREERS IN VIDEO GAME MEDIA confirmed
6:30 has a panel around “All things Pro Wrestling” (a guilty pleasure of mine), but there is currently still a “TBA” slot at that time and it’s in the same room that the Video Game Media panel was in, so I will pencil n the Pro Wrestling for now and see what fills that spot.
The TBA turned into Fandom America: Civil War, a debate of the best and worst of Marvel/DC/GOT/Walking Dead. Sounds much more interesting than the Pro Wrestling panel.
**6:30-7:15PM Fandom America: Civil War (Room 203) confirmed (Bonus it’s in the same room as the next panel)
7:30 – Stand-Up Nerdity. Last year in Sacramento I went to the comedy show they had and it was HILARIOUS. I will not be passing this years version of it up.
**7:30 – 8:15 STAND-UP NERDITY (ROOM 203) confirmed
That is it for Friday, since it will likely be close to 5 before I arrive I will have eaten before hand and will grab some late night grub afterwards. No food plan needed.
Saturday morning looks like it’s some more video game items, see above with kid crowds. This will be a great chance to walk the floor for a few hours and maybe get some cosplay pics and hopefully an interview or two with some artists.
** BONUS ** all day free play at Coin-Op Game Room of Sacramento — close by place to get my beer going
12:30 has a panel called “Start your creativity engines!” that only intersects the Billy Boyd panel and unfortunately the Victor Dandridge self publishing panel. However I’m not 100% on Pippen and while Victor is a great speaker and I love him in some other panels, I’m not self publishing comics so this panel isn’t hitting my sweet spot. Looks like it’s creativity unless that TBA that is also scheduled at 12:30 hits a homerun.
Edit: The TBA at 12:30 turns out to be about American Horror Story, not a show I watch so creativity it is.
**12:30-1:15 START YOUR CREATIVITY ENGINES! (ROOM 203) Confirmed
1:30 has a TBA panel and WWE’s Big Show panel, but both of those would intersect the 2:00 “Spawn of the Pulps: The Twisted roots of Comics” panel. So unless that TBA panel hits it hard I’ll be back on the con floor for a while
2:00 has the aforementioned Spawn of the Pulps panel
Edit: The TBA at 1:30 turned out to be a starting cosplay panel, sticking with Spawn of the Pulps.
**2:00-2:45 SPAWN OF THE PULPS: THE TWISTED ROOTS OF COMICS confirmed
So here is where some hard choices are about to start coming into play. 3pm is William Shatner with a competing TBA panel, 4pm is the Marvel Legacy panel vs. the Denis O’Hare panel. 5pm is Evan Peters, 6:30 is Video Game Bang live podcast vs. a TBA panel which BOTH compete against the 7:00 costume contest. Not to mention ALL of this leaves no time to eat, so let’s trim off the least painful losses.
The costume contest is not to be missed, so I’m sorry Cory and Aaron but I’m gonna have to pass on this one.
I really wanted to see the Denis O’Hare and Evan Peters panel so I think those have to be locked.
So my biggest issue is this: I have to leave some time here to eat and the 3pm hour is looking like the only time I can open up.
Sorry Captain Kirk, no replicators in your century so food wins out.
**2:45-3:45 EAT confirmed
**4:00-4:45 DENIS O’HARE confirmed
**5:00-5:45 EVAN PETERS confirmed
**7:00-9:oo WIZARD WORLD COSTUME CONTEST confirmed
Hmmm .. looking at this I also have a hole from 5:45 to 7:00 .. maybe we can save Shatner by pushing eating off until 5:45-6:45 …. This will have to be played by ear at convention time.
**BONUS Coin-Op Game Room of Sacramento comes through again with a 9pm MvC tournament .. I was never really great at the game but it may be fun to go have a beer and watch some gameplay.
Sunday morning looks much the same as previous days, a lot of video game items passing again.
12:00 hits with another choice: Villians vs. Villians which looks like a great philosophical discussion panel or Sebastian Stan. Who am I kidding it’s Winter Soldier, can’t pass it up.
**12:00-12:45PM LONGING. RUSTED. SEVENTEEN. DAYBREAK. FURNACE. NINE. BENIGN. HOMECOMING. ONE. FREIGHTCAR. SEBASTIAN STAN. (BALLROOM) confirmed
1:00 has a 1/2 hour panel with Hayley Atwell, but that would bump directly against a 1:30 panel about movie and TV trailers. Sorry Agent Carter.
**1:30-2:15PM TRAILER PARK 2.0 (ROOM 202) confirmed
2:30 has a panel on blogging, vlogging, podcasting, etc. I wonder if I’m going to that or not?
**2:30-3:15PM EVERYONE’S A CRITIC (ROOM 202) confirmed
And that will end the Con Panels scheduling for me, but that doesn’t mean I am done planning. Once I walk through the vendor floor for the first time I will have to setup some times to do some other reporting, interviews, periscoping, etc. This is a packed weekend, but I wouldn’t trade my passions for anything so I am grateful and thankful every chance I get to bring you as much content as I can provide.
If you want to get a hold of me while I’m at con then just follow @geekonanything on twitter. I will be responding and periscoping as much as I can while I’m at con so please be patient if it’s not an immediate response.
